Super Mario Cake Pops

Movember is here again, growing moustaches and raising awareness of men’s health issues.

I got these Wilton moustache icing decorations few months ago and had almost forgotten about them, until beginning of this month and what better timing for featuring some cute “mo” decorations.

Super Mario is my all time favorite video game character and moustache being one of his prominent features I thought turning him into a cake pop would be a fun little baking project, and it truly was! 😀

Mix cake crumbs with whipped cream cheese icing. (cake and icing recipe in bottom of this post.)

Take small portions of the mixture, 12-14g and form into oval shape for head and separate small round balls for the nose, place into refrigerator until ready to dip.

Using edible red marker draw a little “M” logos on round icing decorations such as the flat side of icing decoration eyeballs.

Melt 200 grams of white chocolate and mix with drop of orange candy coloring for more skin like hue.

Using a toothpick dip the small balls into white chocolate and allow to dry before removing from the stick.

Dip a lollipop stick in white chocolate and insert in the oval cake balls gently pushing up to middle so that you can feel it sits firmly on the stick, lie the cake pops on their side until the base is dry.

Carefully dip into white chocolate and place nose and mustache quickly before the chocolate dries.

Put into cake pop holder to dry.

Melt about 1/3 bag of red candy melts, I used Wilton Limited Edition Flavor, Red Velvet Candy Melts. Cut 7 candy melts into half to use as the cap.

Dip the top of the cakes in red.

Apply cap and logo quickly before the candy melt dries.

As Mario is easily recognized by his red cap and two distinct features; large nose and mustache, I did not see need to add more facial features and left them as minimalistic as possible.

Made one version with eyes, these eyes were just popping out way too much!!

Happier with this minimalistic version. Still have work to do with perfecting my techniques with candy melts.

Chocolate Cake Pop mixture used for 13 Mario Pops is 1/3 of the full mixture made by mixing cold crumbled cocoa cake with whipped cream cheese icing prepared with the following recipes.
