Sweethearts Macarons

Sweetheart Macarons

Show your love, say it with macarons!

These conversation pastel coloured heart macarons are inspired by the Sweethearts candy.Sweetheart MacaronsThough I never actually had one, I fell in love with those candies few years back when looking at cards in a local stationery store in Cyprus, I stumbled upon a simple but adorable card with picture of small sweethearts candy with cute messages printed on them. That card ended up on our fridge and was there for years, making me smile every time I’d look at it.(It’s still to find it’s way back there from the last moving boxes)

Growing up in Finland where Valentine’s Day is about celebrating friendship, this day has never had any romantic meaning for me. It’s lovely celebration though, full of hearts, love and appreciation.

With these heart macarons I wish you all a love filled day with your friends and loved ones. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sweetheart Macarons
These heart macarons are filled with store bought spreads: Genesis pistachio spread, St Dalfour Strawberry jam, Skippy peanut butter and Nutella hazelnut chocolate spread. Additionally, you can use any type of ganache or buttercream.

  1. Preheat oven to 160ºC , prepare 2-3 baking sheets with baking paper or heart macaron baking sheets and 3 bowls or plates one for each colour.
  2. Place half of the egg whites in mixing bowl and start mixing on medium high speed.
  3. Place the granulated sugar and water in a pot and put it on the stove on medium heat, once it starts boiling let boil for a minute and remove from heat.
  4. Slowly pour the sugar syrup to the egg white foam while continuing to mix on medium high speed.
  5. Turn whisking on high speed and continue whisking for about 5 minutes, and continue beating until you get stiff and glossy peaks.
  6. Meanwhile in a separate bowl mix almonds and powdered sugar until fully incorporated, then add remaining egg whites, mix and divide into three plates adding a drop of food colouring in each.
  7. Then divide the meringue and combine the mixtures by gently folding with a spoon.
  8. Place in piping bags.
  9. Pipe heart shaped macaron shells onto the baking sheet.
  10. Tap the baking sheet few times to get rid of possible air bubbles and bake in preheated oven for 15-17 minutes and leave to cool down.
  11. Once cooled line matching hearts with one side up.
  12. Write your message such as "Be Mine", "Kiss Me", "Call Me", "XO XO" etc by using an edible marker.
  13. Pipe your fillings starting with on flat side of non decorated shell, starting from piping Nutella close to the edges and placing strawberry jam in middle for red hearts.
  14. Repeat same for yellow hearts, using peanut butter in middle.
  15. Then repeat the same for blue/green hearts using pistachio spread in middle.
