Mocha Squares

moccasquaresEasy yummy dessert, in this version the cake is less sweet and gets it’s kick from the topping.


  • 100g unsalted butter, softened
  • 50g golden caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 150g plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 60ml milk

Mocha Squares

For the topping:

  • 25g unsalted butter, softened
  • 20ml strong coffee
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 100g powdered sugar
  • caramelized hazelnuts

Mocha Squares

      1. Preheat oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
      2. In a mixing bowl beat butter and sugar, until incorporated and creamy.
      3. Add eggs one at time and continue beating for few minutes.
      4. Meanwhile in a separate bowl incorporate all dry ingredients.
      5. Add dry ingredients and milk in the main mixture and mix until incorporated.
      6. Pour the batter on the baking tray and spread to a square, approx. 20x20cm.Mocha Squares
      7. Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes and leave to cool.
      8. Prepare mocha topping by sifting dry ingredients and mixing it with the butter and coffee, until smoothMocha Squares
      9. Cut into squares using a cutter or knife.Mocha Squares
      10. Spread the mocha topping over the squares and sprinkle with nuts/sugar sprinkles.Mocha Squares
